About Us

The Gay and Lesbian Latin@ Organization (GALLO) is a charitable 501c3, cultural and social organization created to educate and instill pride and advocacy for LGBT Latin@’s and our allies. GALLO was founded in 2006 by Cristina E. Martinez, a Latina activist, to inspire the city of Houston to be more aware of the cultural value and importance of its Latin@ LGBT residents and to help the community at large.

GALLO fundraises money for only 501c(3) non profit organization and donates or gives in-kind donations to other 501c(3) organizations. Each year GALLO selects one or two non profit organizations as beneficiaries of our yearly black tie dance. If your organization is not a 501c(3) please do not apply to become a beneficiary or ask for a contribution, donation or in-kind gift from GALLO.

Since its inception GALLO has sponsored youth academic achievement, hosted a yearly black tie dance to end a week of events during the Gay PRIDE week, been the only LGBT organization to participate in 5 de Mayo parade, hosted wellness events, and social events throughout the year including Hispanic month in September and celebrating posadas during the month of December.  GALLO is recognized in the community as the access point for LGBT Latin@s due to its involvement and the recognition received by many of its members.

The goals of the organization are:
-provide access to higher education for GLBT students through scholarships
-develop workforce training seminars to help place GLBT adults back into the workforce with corporations that do not discriminate based on sexual orientation,
-create programs to address the needs of GLBT people of color, and
-create gender identity programs.

GALLO is about giving Latin@ GLBT people an organization to represent them and an organization they can turn to when they are seeking help. GALLO serves as a referral source and works in partnership with other organizations to help the Latin@ community and the people of color community find low cost quality health services and by referring them to attorney’s. accountants or other services as the need arises.

Members of GALLO are committed to making a difference in the community and you will often find GALLO members volunteering and helping or assisting with food, clothing, etc. We welcome any referrals of people of color in need and welcome and invite everyone to join us as a member.
